Mesoscopic Transport: the Electron-gas Sum Rules in a Driven Quantum Point Contact
نویسندگان
چکیده
In this paper we review the structure of the conserving sum rules in the mesoscopic regime, from the weakest driving fields to the strongest. As compact quantitative expressions of the microscopic conservation laws, the sum rules entail a set of straightforward criteria to be met by proper theoretical descriptions of metallicelectron behavior. As we discuss below, these criteria are quite enough to rule out models of mesoscopic processes that fail to uphold the conservation laws.

In recent years, semiconductor nanostructures have become the model systems of choice for investigation of electrical conduction on short length scales. Quantum transport is studied in a two dimensional electron gas because of the combination of a large Fermi wavelength and large mean free path. In the present work, a numerical method is implemented in order to contribute to the understanding ...
متن کاملWhere is the shot noise of a quantum point contact?
Reznikov et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 75, 3340 (1995)]] have presented definitive observations of nonequilibrium noise in a quantum point contact. Especially puzzling is the "anomalous" peak structure of the excess noise measured at constant current; to date it remains unexplained. We show that their experiment directly reveals the deep link between conservation principles in the electron gas and i...
متن کاملCorrelated Electron Transport in One-dimensional Mesoscopic Conductors
Mesoscopic systems have emerged as a result of advanced microfabrication processing. These systems provide a new playground where tailor-made structures are available. This enables the study of quantum phenomena due to dimensional confinement and manipulation of system geometries. Two specific systems are investigated in this dissertation: single-walled carbon nanotubes and quantum point contac...
متن کاملPhase coherent transmission through interacting mesoscopic systems
This is a review of the phase coherent transmission through interacting mesoscopic conductors. As a paradigm we study the transmission amplitude and the dephasing rate for electron transport through a quantum dot in the Coulomb blockade regime. We summarize experimental and theoretical work devoted to the phase of the transmission amplitude. It is shown that the evolution of the transmission ph...
متن کاملViolation of Onsager symmetry for a ballistic channel Coulomb coupled to a quantum ring
We investigate a scattering of electron which is injected individually into an empty ballistic channel containing a cavity that is Coulomb coupled to a quantum ring charged with a single-electron. We solve the time-dependent Schrödinger equation for the electron pair with an exact account for the electron-electron correlation. Absorption of energy and angular momentum by the quantum ring is not...
